Do you have a spare R34 Million odd?
The Tesla Megapack is large-scale rechargeable lithium-ion battery stationary energy storage product, intended for use at battery storage power stations, manufactured by Tesla Energy, the clean energy subsidiary of Tesla, Inc. Launched in 2019, each Megapack can store up to 3.9 megawatt-hours of electricity.
Megapack is a powerful on demand battery that provides energy storage and support, helping to stabilize the grid and prevent outages.
Megapack stores energy for the grid reliably and safely, eliminating the need for gas peaker plants and helping to avoid outages. Each unit can store over 3 MWh of energy—that’s enough energy to power an average of 3,600 homes for one hour.
Some Megapack Installations:
Angleton, Texas: The Gambit Energy Storage Park is an 81-unit, 100 MW system that provides the grid with renewable energy storage and greater outage protection during severe weather.
Soldotna, Alaska: Homer Electric installed a 37-unit, 46 MW system to increase renewable energy capacity along Alaska’s rural Kenai Peninsula, reducing reliance on gas turbines and helping to prevent outages.
Victoria, Australia: The Victoria Big Battery – a 212-unit, 350 MW system – is one of the largest renewable energy storage parks in the world, providing backup protection to Victoria.
As at 5 April 2023 the Tesla Megapack (without installation) now starts at $1,879,840. However, Tesla has pushed back the delivery time, maintaining its 2-year wait list for the popular energy product, which will now be delivered in Q1 2025 if ordered today.
Tesla have an online configurator for the Megapack that features prices that change depending on how many Megapacks you order and have installed.
We estimate that one Megapack would be enough to keep our pet project proposal – Parsons Power Park – and plugged our figures into the online configurator to find a price of: $1 776 110 (R34 070 052.46). Tesla estimates the annual maintenance at $8 440 (R16 1899.46) with a 2% annual price escalation. Prices EXCLUDE installation.
And, if we wanted to order one we need to put down a $1 000 (R19 182.40) deposit.
The Victoria Big Battery Video:
The Government of Victoria, Australia says this about the Big Battery:
The Victorian Big Battery operates as a virtual transmission line between November and March each year. It enables increased flows of up to 250 MW over the Victoria-New South Wales interconnector. This reduces the risk of unscheduled load shedding during summer.
The Big Battery also participates in energy markets throughout the year, with 50 MW available for this purpose during summer and the full 300 MW at other times. This additional capacity will lower electricity prices for all Victorians and deliver significant net benefits to Victoria, far outweighing the cost of the project.
