How the Payment Process Works for Straton Private Prepaid Meters

8 May 2024 By Alan

In South Africa, private prepaid meters have become a popular choice for managing electricity consumption in residential and commercial properties. These meters allow property owners, landlords, and body corporates to accurately monitor and control electricity usage while providing tenants with a convenient and transparent payment system. One such example is Straton Prepaid, a leading provider of prepaid metering solutions in the country. In this article, we will explore how the payment process works for private prepaid meters in South Africa, from the client buying online to the payment processor to the client.

In short: Landlords install prepaid meters, Tenants purchases prepaid through the Easy Pay system or Online (Payment Processor), Tenant receives Token, Tenant enters token, Payment Processor transfers tenant payment to Metering Management Company, Metering Management Company pays Landlords and sends statement reflecting all purchases and amount owed to Landlords once every month (less processing and admin fees).

Buying Prepaid Electricity Online:

To begin the payment process, clients can purchase prepaid electricity online through various platforms. Straton Prepaid offers access to a user-friendly online service that allows clients to conveniently top up their prepaid meters from the comfort of their own homes. This eliminates the need for physical visits to payment centers or the hassle of handling cash transactions. Clients can simply log in to the online payment processor and proceed with the payment process.

Selecting the Payment Method:

Once the client has logged in, they will be presented with different payment methods to choose from. These payment methods may include credit or debit card payments, electronic funds transfers (EFT), or mobile payment options. Clients can select the payment method that is most convenient for them and proceed with the transaction.

Payment Processing:

After selecting the payment method, the client’s payment details are securely transmitted to the payment processor. The payment processor acts as an intermediary between the client and the prepaid metering system, ensuring that the transaction is processed smoothly and securely. Straton Prepaid utilizes advanced encryption and security measures to protect the client’s sensitive information during the payment process.

Verifying the Payment:

Once the payment has been processed, the prepaid metering system verifies the payment and updates the client’s prepaid meter accordingly. This ensures that the client’s electricity credits are accurately reflected on their meter, allowing them to monitor their usage in real-time. The verification process is typically automated and happens instantaneously, providing clients with immediate access to their purchased electricity credits.

Client Access to Electricity Credits:

With the payment successfully verified, the client can now access their purchased electricity credits. These credits are sent via SMS, email and/or displayed immediately after purchase. The prepaid meter deducts the consumed electricity units from the client’s available credits, allowing them to monitor their usage and make informed decisions about their electricity consumption.

Monitoring and Recharging:

Clients can easily monitor their electricity usage and remaining credits through the display on their prepaid meter and via the online payment portal. This empowers them to track their consumption patterns and make adjustments to their usage habits if necessary. When the client’s electricity credits run low, they can simply repeat the payment process to recharge their prepaid meter and continue enjoying uninterrupted electricity supply.

Payment Processing Fees:

These fees are normally recovered by Landlords from the tenant and vary from 8 to 16% (in exceptional cases more) including VAT. They cover payment processing fees (bank fees per transaction) from initial purchase, bank fees from Easy Pay to the Metering Management Company, bank fees to Landlord and the cost of preparing and storing all purchases per meter plus the admin fee to provide monthly and ad hoc reports.

The admin fees are all prescribed by NERSA who do not allow Landlords to make money on the purchase of prepaid services, but ONLY to recover direct costs. Some landlords opto to recover the cost of the equipment installed and some Landlords pay a higher admin fee to metering companies that supply the meters for ‘free’ but use higher admin fees to recover the cost of ‘free’ equipment.

Ask your vendor what their fee is.

The payment process for private prepaid meters in South Africa, exemplified by Straton Prepaid, offers clients a convenient and transparent way to manage their electricity consumption. By allowing tenants to buy prepaid electricity online, select their preferred payment method, and securely process their payments, private prepaid meters provide a user-friendly experience for both property owners and tenants. With near real-time monitoring of electricity usage and easy recharging options, clients have greater control over their energy consumption and can make more informed decisions about their electricity usage.
