How to Save Water in the Toilet

Alan · 2 September 2024 ·

Toilets are one of the biggest water users in the home, but there are many ways to reduce their water consumption.

Here are some simple fixes and smart tips to help you save water in the toilet:

  1. Fix leaks: A single leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water per day. Check for leaks by adding food coloring to the tank, if the color appears in the bowl there is a leakage. Attend to it immediately
  2. Use a toilet flapper repair kit: If your toilet has a faulty flapper. Water can continue to run into the bowl. Replace the flapper with a repair kit to save up to 10 gallons per day.
  3. Don’t use toilets as wastebaskets: Do not flush cigarette butts and paper towels on the toilets.
  4. Install a dual flush converter: If replacing the toilet isn’t feasible, consider a dual flush converter, which allows you to choose between a full or partial flush.
  5. Check for proper installation: Ensure the toilet is installed correctly as improper installation can lead to water waste.
  6. Adjust the float: If the float is set too high, water will continue to flow into the tank. Adjust the floats to the recommended level to save up to thirty six litres of water per day.
  7. Use water saving device: Devices like toilet tank bags or bricks can displace water in the tank, reducing the amount used per flush.
  8. Install low-flow toilets: Replace old toilets with low-flow models (1.28 gallons per flush or less). Dual-flush toilets are also a great option, using significantly less water for liquid waste.
  9. Use grey water: Consider using wastewater from doing the dishes, washing vegetables, or taking a bath to flush the toilets.
  10. Monitor your water usage: Regularly check your water meter to detect hidden leaks or water-wasting habits.

By implementing these simple fixes and smart tips, you will significantly reduce your toilet water consumption, contributing to a more sustainable future.
